Community Conference, as envisioned, has emerged as a forum where the authentic voices of communities come to life. The IIIrd edition of the community conference started today and will continue till the 6th December 2024. The last two Community Conferences including the current edition, facilitated under the aegis of the Promise of Commons Initiative, have been dynamic and participatory events that aimed to strengthen, empower, and unify communities across the country and elsewhere by fostering open dialogue, shared learning, and promoting collaborative action. These community conferences have enabled transformative power for participating communities by providing a forum, emphasizing their role in unifying diverse narratives, promoting authentic storytelling, and fostering meaningful dialogue.
Why Community Conference: Usual methods of storytelling by an external entity, be it a researcher or a NGO personnel like us, often result in fragmented narratives. More often than not, they draw parallels with experiences from elsewhere and can result in generalizations that may not authentically represent the unique context and intricacies of a community. The narratives are often guided by research questions and theoretical frameworks, which may inadvertently shape the narratives to align with predetermined perspectives. Narratives are tailored to fit specific audiences, leading to a disjointed representation of community life and inadvertently may lead to oversights and omissions within the storytelling process.
While analytical rigor is crucial, it should not overshadow the lived experiences of community members. The Community Conference prioritizes a participatory and inclusive approach, empowering community members to share their stories without the constraints of predefined frameworks.
Further, Communities often lack platforms to express themselves at different levels. Recognizing this gap, the community conference is curated to create an event where different stakeholders can listen to the authentic voices of communities. These expressions occur in their own way, using their own languages and dialects, referencing pictures from their locality, and grounding themselves in their unique settings. The Community conference has emerged as a platform to weave these fragments into a cohesive tapestry. By doing so, a more accurate and nuanced portrayal of the community's challenges, achievements, and aspirations are taking shape.
We realise that the unique strength of community conferences lies in their ability to serve as bridges for communities to learn from one another's stories across the country and elsewhere. Beyond just sharing narratives, the conferences inspire participants to implement similar initiatives in their own localities. This interconnected network becomes a powerful vehicle for sharing the richness of community stewardship, struggles, and achievements. By emphasizing on inclusivity, celebrating diversity, and fostering genuine dialogue, these conferences provide a stage where authentic community narratives can be shared and appreciated.
Why (Making it) online: In the wake of a rapidly evolving digital landscape, the design of hosting an online community conference for celebrating community stewardship was the desire to amplify their voices and provide a platform for their stories to resonate with a large audience. The shift to virtual conferences provided an opportunity to transcend geographical limitations. Participants from various corners of the country and the globe could engage in discussions without the logistical constraints of travel.
The vision was clear – celebrate and recognize the remarkable stewardship within communities, with a focus on spreading them as wide as possible. The selection of organising the conference in a virtual mode provided an opportunity to transcend geographical limitations, having participants from various corners who could engage in discussions from the comfort of their villages, without the logistical constraints of travel. This inclusivity was crucial for ensuring that a diverse range of communities could participate and contribute their perspectives and experiences, enriching the overall narrative of the conference.
We were, however, aware of the existing digital divide and efforts needed to bridge this gap, ensuring that communities with limited digital access are not excluded. We were also aware of the language barriers, that communities needed to speak in their own languages, but the message had to reach communities with different cultural backgrounds in the other regions of the country. We overcame some of these challenges through partner organisations/facilitators who could assist in reaching out to villages/communities who have demonstrated stewardship of their resources, building bridges to help them access technology as well as overcoming language barriers by enabling short translations in English/Hindi to enable the larger audiences to understand the stories.
We were aware that technical glitches, internet connectivity problems, and platform-related issues could disrupt the flow of the virtual conference and may lead to a less seamless experience and affect the engagement of participants. While we prepared ourselves to avoid/reduce such incidents, we were driven and inspired by the larger desire to amplify the community voices and provide a platform for their stories to be heard.
Curating the Conference: The Community Conference is designed with the primary goal of capturing and showcasing the authentic stories expressed in a natural way and expression. The efforts involved establishing trust and ensuring that all voices are valued and respected. The essence of the conference lay in creating a space where community members can express themselves genuinely, without external influences or distortions.
The emphasis on storytelling as a central tenet and methodology of the community conference, served as a powerful medium for expressing emotions. Beyond verbal expression, participants were encouraged to share their narratives, anecdotes, and experiences, allowing for a more profound and unfiltered emotional connection. Incorporating pictorial/visual and creative forms of expression like songs and music provided means for individuals/groups to convey their emotions authentically.
The last two Community Conferences reaffirmed our belief that-
- The storytelling platform would provide opportunities to communities to amplify their voices. This will enable individuals/collectives to share their experiences, perspectives, and challenges with a wider audience.
- Storytelling in such a platform would build confidence among community members, allow them to recognize the value of their narratives and fosters a sense of empowerment and pride in their stories.
- Storytelling could emerge as a means of sharing traditions, customs, and unique aspects of their culture, ensuring that these vital components are passed across the region.
- By sharing stories, communities may reinforce their identity and uniqueness. These initiatives aim to bring community members together, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity.
- Storytelling could allow communities to shed light on issues they face. By expressing their challenges, communities can raise awareness both within and outside their community, garnering support and possibly address specific needs and concerns of the community.
- Shared narratives can create stronger connections among individuals/ communities, leading to more collaborative efforts.
